1898

Began as a farm implement manufacturer in Salem, Ohio

1940’s

Entered into manufacture of vertical and horizontal blast hole
drills.
Developed the McCarthy Coal Drill which became the
Salem Coal Auger

1950’s – 1960’s – 1970’s

Laird Orr purchases his first Salem Coal Auger.  He purchases
various models as new product line is developed.  He eventually
becomes a member of the Salem Million Ton Club.

He and his son, Taylor, move the coal mining operations and
augering operations to the heart of coal country in Kentucky.

1988 – present

Laird and Taylor Orr purchase the Salem Tool Company and it
becomes Salem Tool Inc..  It is relocated to London, Kentucky
where manufacture, service and parts sales continue to serve the
coal industry in the heart of coal country.
